FAQ

General Enquires

Absolutely! Most of our students came to us with no grappling or martial arts experience. Our classes are structured to benefit someone with no prior training. Everyone needs to start somewhere!

Come in wearing comfortable clothes (t-shirt and shorts/tights) and bring water for hydration. We will provide you with a Gi (training uniform) during your trial. If you own your own Gi, you are welcome to use yours.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a great way to get fit, lose weight, and more. Everyone on the mat is at a different point of their fitness goals/journey. So no – come as you are and train at your own pace. We will make progress together!

Many who started have said those exact same words, so yes, you should definitely give BJJ a chance!

Trying something new, particularly a sport, will often feel awkward at first. You might struggle when you start, but in time you will see improvement – often more quickly than you expect! BJJ is a lot about technique; our coaches are always around to help simplify things for you.

Many uncoordinated individuals before you have taken the leap and have become impressive BJJ practitioners!

Yes! Come train with us! Everyone from all training affiliations/schools are always welcome.

No – at the moment CMJJA only offers grappling instruction.

The weights area is a perk that comes with our memberships. Adult members and parents of our kids class students are welcome to get a work-out in.

Promotions are done by our academy black belt, and it depend on several factors – attendance, skillset and character to name just a few. Progress that will carry over off the mats too.

Promotions is very much a personal journey – a recognition of improving technical ability and overcoming mental and physical challenges. Everyone progresses through the ranks at their own pace.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu can be an effective addition to your weight loss plan. There are many benefits of BJJ that will supplement and possibly accelerate your weight loss goals.

That being said, losing weight (and keeping it off) involves having an overall healthy lifestyle – which includes having a balanced diet and regular exercise.

While you will hear many success stories of students losing weight training BJJ, their biggest takeaway is how it encourages small changes that lead to long-term positive habits that optimizes health and well-being.

It would be a privilege to help you on your health goals. Come join us and surround yourself with other health-minded people who are on the same journey and will help you stay the path to sustaining a healthier life!

Kids / Youth Program

4 years old. However, all kids are different. Utilize our free trial to see if our classes are a good fit for your child. Sometimes we advise parents to wait a year or two so the classes can truly benefit the child.

16 year-olds are required to train in the adult classes.

While we have teens training in the kids classes, youth aged 14 and 15 will be advised by the coaches on whether they should train in kids or adults classes. Often, our experienced teens train in both.

Parent are always encouraged to watch! Being aware about what your child is learning in class will help their progress. In fact, we encourage you to join us too, and attend the adult classes! Our students whose parents train too enjoy BJJ even more, having that shared activity together every week. They even get to spar together during our combined classes every Saturday!

Parents are allowed to watch in the sitting area during training, but are asked to refrain from coaching from off the mats.

As parents of our academy’s jiu-jitsu athletes, you are also welcome to get a work-out in at our weights area while your child is in class! Other parents also use this time to run errands and have some me-time!

We advise our students to train at least twice a week. Consistency is important for improvement on the mats and to make training more enjoyable.

However, frequency of training is entirely up to you and your child’s schedule. Our memberships allow students to attend unlimited classes throughout the week!

Our gym has a strict no-bullying policy. Our coaches work with educators and schools on issues involving our students.

The students of our academy are not only taught self-defense techniques, but are constantly reminded the responsibility that comes with learning a martial art. Our students gain confidence to stand-up for themselves and to treat others with kindness and respect.

To attend advanced kids classes, we require the kids to have gained enough experience training in fundamentals classes. The coach will usually inform you once your child can start attending the advanced kids classes. There is no change in fees. Speak to the coaches if you are curious about whether your child is ready.

We still encourage students to continue attending at least one fundamentals class each week.

Teens with some experience are often permitted to join the adults classes. Talk to the coaches about your interest.

Yes! Parents are welcome to work-out at our weights area while their child is in class!

Women-Only Class

Women-only classes typically focuses on fundamentals, and highlights specific self-defense situations. The main objective of women-only class is to have all the women training at the same time. This way you are guaranteed a female partner to work your techniques safely!

Our women’s team is always very excited to meet new prospective students and eager to share the benefits of training BJJ! We understand the challenges specific to women when it comes to training a combat sport. We’re here for you! Come in for a class and experience the camaraderie.

The academy does not offer specific self-defense classes, however does run self-defense seminars at local and community events ran by schools, sororities, and more.

Self-defense techniques are also embedded in our teaching curriculum.

Adult women and teen girls with or without grappling experience are welcome.
