Kids / Youth Classes

We believe there is a place for martial arts in a child’s growth. We primarily emphasize that jiu-jitsu, like most things in life, is about balance – how brute force must be paired with control; discipline with fun; power with responsibility; leadership with followership and confidence with humility. The mats are a good place for students learn when and where each of these are appropriate. Our kids don’t get bullied and don’t bully others!  At each training, on top of learning self-defense, we believe our young students will practice greater skill and focus not just on the mats but also in other life skills that will help them excel and live their best life.

We strive to make the mats a safe space for them to discover their own potential, who they are, who they want to be, and what drives them forward. Our goal for the kids program is to have a hand in cultivating confident leaders of all ages who practice patience, kindness, ferocity and grit on and off the mats.

Adult Gi Jiu-jitsu

To put it simply, Gi is the uniform traditionally worn when training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.  In the Gi, students can utilize the fabric of the uniform to establish grips in an effort to control or submit their opponent. Starting BJJ in the Gi can help you focus on the technical basics of positioning, grip fighting and control.

Do come in and try our Gi classes! Gi BJJ is often a good introduction to the sport of BJJ whether you are an aspiring fighter or a new grapping enthusiast. This class is where many of us all started too! The more experienced students in our classes are also eager to support anyone just starting out. Come out to try your first class and experience the camaraderie! Make some new friends and have a great workout all at the same time.

Adult No-gi Jiu-jitsu

While there are many nuanced differences between training in the Gi or No-gi, they are both fundamentally similar – to improve your positional control and ultimately submit your opponent. No-gi training however is often more dynamic and matches run at a faster pace. While it allows for more natural abilities like speed and strength to compliment match success, it also requires a better understanding of how to hold positional dominance.

Whatever your goals may be for training, we encourage you to try our No-gi classes too. While they have slightly different rules, sharpen different skills, emphasize different abilities and encourage different fighting strategies, much of what is learned from both is largely transferable. Training both Gi and No-gi is essential to having a well-rounded picture of BJJ.  Both are incredibly effective forms of self-defense.

Women-Only Classes

Combat sports have traditionally been geared toward men. Today however, there are many pioneer women athletes in BJJ who have paved the way for women all over the world to benefit from learning the martial art, and more importantly, to practice it with confidence.

At CMJJA, we always encourage women to be involved in BJJ particularly for it’s potential in providing practical ways for efficient and realistic self-defense. However, we also acknowledge that as a contact sport, it presents specific challenges and/or complications for women that are not always within their control. Our classes are in place so that we can help mitigate these complications that could potentially stifle them from participating by always having a space for them to train safely.

While the sport has come a long way,  we additionally understand the challenge of having enough women on the mats at the same time, particularly in a small town like ours. This is why we will always be committed to having women-only classes available in an effort to bring women in our small community together. We hope build a supportive community amongst women practitioners that empowers and builds each other up whilst sharing the mat.

Wrestling

All Brazilian Jiu-jitsu matches, much like all other styles of fighting, start on the feet. In order to use the techniques of submission grappling, we have to safely bring the fight to the ground.  Wrestling is one of the most effective ways to do this; which is why it is an important aspect of submission grappling sports like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Wrestling teaches the fundamental biomechanics, tactics, and strategies you will need to avoid and impose takedowns in your martial arts journey.  We do teach some wrestling as part of our BJJ curriculum, but since wrestling takes a large toll on various energy systems and requires a high degree of physical coordination; we offer a separate wrestling class for those who wish to pursue wrestling more seriously.

Wrestling is the oldest known organized social sport, and we believe in wrestling as a gift to build stronger individuals and stronger communities.

Strength & Conditioning

*Available for kids and adults!

We recognize the importance of strength and conditioning and it’s power to not only improve BJJ performance, but overall health. Properly structured strength and conditioning sessions improve physical health in a variety of ways, including enhanced strength and confidence, muscular endurance and power, decreased fatigue and improved flexibility. The kids / youth program helps our young athletes enhance their gross motor skills. Our strength and conditioning classes aim to improve your form and efficiency in all movement disciplines to bring you further in your fitness goals.

The motivation to lift weights can be difficult to sustain when done alone. This is why we believe in having these classes – so that you will never have to lift alone! We are here to support and push you. We’re here to get better together!
